Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance (Tremco Roofing) announced the acquisition of the BioTray™ vegetated-roof product line from Rana Creek, a company based in Carmel Valley, Calif. BioTray is described as a natural, biodegradable, modular system for vegetated roofs, consisting of 17-inch-square trays composed of natural latex and coconut coir. Coconut coir is a fibrous, renewable product derived from coconut husks. Tremco said that unlike traditional modular systems, the coconut fiber decomposes over time and the BioTray module is converted into growing media (soil). The process allows the growing and installing of vegetated roofs without the use of plastic, increasing the sustainability of the roof, the company said.
