I frequently check in to Westcoat's website to see what they might have uploaded...today's visit to their spec pages found a new addition to the ALX spec line up; previously the ALX "Standard" spec, "Custom" spec and "Under Tile" spec were there...now there is a "CSI Spec" listed there too.
Click here to read the "CSI Spec" at Westcoat's website. I say it is deceitful and fraudulent to publish this document with the ICC # on it under 1.03 References, indicating that ICC-ES has evaluated the system as installed, and that they have testing for Class A and One Hour where they are specifying WP-40 under this system.
Especially since it says under 3.03, Installation, A,
to install materials in accordance with manufacturer's directions.
What should be said is to achieve a Class A assembly, no WP-40 can be used. Why? Because it was not evaluated with WP-40 under it in any tests that we know about. Westcoat won't produce any test results to us and no one I no of has any copies either...of course, that could be because, if Life Paint's accustaions are correct, the test data belongs to Life Paint for AL. But that's just my opinion.
Please oh please architects and spec writers everywhere...watch out for this spec, you could be getting lead down a path...bring a paddle to get back out using X&*@ creek!
HERE IS A COPY OF MY EMAIL TO MARK JOHNSON, new prez of ICC-ES...it was also sent to Paul Koury at Westcoat.
Hello Mark,
I saw in the ICC news you have succeeded John Nosse as President. Congratulations on such a prestigious position as head of ICC-ES and its role in protecting the public.
I have also copied in the owner of Westcoat directly as well.
I wanted to bring to your attention and ask for your assistance with the manufacturer in the above report. I have made several complaints in the recent past to ICC-Es without much success and to my utter amazement and frustration about the Westcoat ALX system. Currently ICC has a report listing it as a fire resistant Class A assembly http://westcoat.com/downloads/WP-40_WP-41_Spec_Sheet.pdf
Please review this spec sheet published as a “CSI spec”. It is found at Westcoat’s website and I will assume will be at CSI’s site as well.
I am directly accusing Westcoat of malfeasance and fraud by issuing this spec as written.
Under 1.03 A They reference the ICC ES report for Westcoat ALX as well as claiming one Hour tests and Class A.
Under 2.02 Materials, they list WP-40 sheet membrane as part of their system as well as listing the ICC #. WP-40 is not part of any evaluated system.
Under 3.03 Installation, they say to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for applying the coating.
http://westcoat.com/downloads/ALX_Standard_Spec_Sheet.pdf This is their standard install spec. Notice it does not have any reference to any ICC evaluations? That’s because they require the installation of WP-40 under their coating. I complained to ICC vociferously about this and their fraud upon ICC and the public at large. The only thing ICC did was to have Westcoat remove any reference to the ICC report on their spec. Disgusting.
The ICC report only lists lath, base coat and the remaining steps of the system, no mention of WP-40 in it… I have questioned why when their specs require WP-40 on the seams and or the whole plywood deck surface.
WP-40 is a Protectowrap product- Rainproof something…it has it’s own ICC report, and it is limited to being installed on rated roofs when on a 16% slope minimum and when under clay or concrete tiles. I did a burn test of my own and the WP-40 ignited underneath the Westcoat alx coating. See it here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1gd2mZuN3g
I do not believe Westcoat has tested this system as spec’d in this document for Class A or One Hour, and by publishing this spec as written is implying that they have and will lead to architects and spec writers to spec a product to be installed that is not in accordance with it’s ICC report. Will ICC demand retraction and removal of their ICC number or will they use more severe sanctions against repeated violations?
How many times does a manufacturer get to deceive the public on ICC’s watch? Please talk to Michael Beaton, who I’m sure will roll his eyes when my name comes up…
Be sure to check on the current status of the Life Paint vs Paul Koury/Pacific Pebbles lawsuit at PACER, where Life Paint just got a decision in it’s favor that the trademark Life Deck is theirs. Life Paint has pictures in evidence of what appears to be black market/bootlegged materials with a “Life Deck “logo on them and their ICC #, when the materials were never QC’d through them. There is a long list of accusations and with sworn testimony from depositions, serious indications that Westcoat never tested any of their materials, rather they data may be Life paint’s and the proprietary formula for ALX may be a rip off of Life Paint’s AL formula, which is a trademarked item. I have over 3000 pages of documents from the lawsuit I have paid for and downloaded from PACER.
I would like to establish, with you as the new President of ICC-ES, a line of communication directly with you and the staff who works on the traffic coating lines. I hope that you will move forward on this email as expeditiously as possible.
I can be reached directly at 805-801-2380.
Sincerely,
